Hiring legal talent in 2025 requires more than a strong job spec. Our recent survey of over 500 lawyers across Germany - highlights a shift in expectations around flexibility, growth, and leadership.
Here are the trends shaping the legal hiring market - and what they mean for employers.
1. Flexibility Is a Top Priority
In our survey, flexibility of working hours and location ranked as the two most important factors lawyers consider when evaluating new roles.
- 64% of respondents prefer optional hybrid work
- 24% would choose remote-first
- Only 4% want to work fully on-site
Lawyers increasingly expect the ability to tailor their schedules and working environments. Hiring processes and offers that reflect this are more likely to resonate with top candidates.
2. Clear Career Development Drives Engagement
The most commonly cited reason for leaving a role? Lack of growth.
- Clear promotion pathways
- Defined job architecture and milestones
- Transparency on where the role leads in 1–3 years
- Support for advancement (even for non-leadership tracks)
- Frustration around stagnation is the #1 reason lawyers leave
This is about structure, transparency, and future-proofing a candidate’s career trajectory.
3. Workplace Culture and Leadership Are Under the Microscope
Survey participants consistently highlighted the importance of:
- Transparent communication
- Trust in leadership
- A supportive, collaborative culture
- Respect for work-life boundaries
These elements are increasingly influencing candidate decision-making.
4. Learning and Development Opportunities Matter
In addition to flexible working and clear advancement, lawyers value access to:
- Access to new legal topics or regulatory frameworks
- Leading projects or cross-functional initiatives
- International assignments
- Formal training or certifications
- Mentorship and internal knowledge-sharing
